“Feed the gut with probiotics and have fermented food to improve the gut health !”
The world started chasing this principle as key to the gut health but do we all need this?
Probiotics technically need to be given during & after antibiotic treatment or if we encounter frequent infections or with people suffering with frequent diarrhoea,IBS,IBD etc.But Ayurveda recommends “Agni” as the driving factor for the body.Probiotics are good in some cases but we should also know that fermented food in excess can lead to increased pitta in our body.;Lemme explain how….any fermented food is produced by an EXOTHERMIC reaction…which means it releases heat and there is a mild acidic reaction …. may it be our dosa idli batters, may it be curd, may it be kanji, may it be addition of yeast to certain foods, they all produce heat in our body …! So people with high pitta in the body should definitely avoid fermented food . But how to increase probiotics in people with high pitta ! Our Indian kitchens store these secrets too! How much we love pudina chutney, aam panna, buttermilk, lassi in summers and our all time favourite GHEE ! Yes they all are our natural probiotics and do include banana, apple, oats and soy beans as a source of “PREBIOTIC”; food to the gut microbiome.. Isn’t it simple! This theory works well with people having inflammations, pitta disorders,GERD,skin and liver issues. But people with Vata constitution and kapha constitution can do well with fermented foods .So the idea of writing this blog is just to prioritise individual approach to gut health than generalised approach!
