SNACKING

Is snacking a genuinely great option?

Physiologically the food takes 6-8 hours to move in stomach and small intestine and then it moves to large intestine for evacuation.Digestion means breaking the food down into nutrients our body can use.Its starts in the mouth and ends in small intestine.Saliva in the mouth can initiate the process of digestion but the real work begins in the stomach .Food mixes with digestive juices in stomach which takes around 40-120 min , watery concoction passes into small bowel and nutrients get absorbed into walls of small intestine which takes around another 40-120 minutes.Denser the food like proteins and fats , longer it takes to digest the food.

Snacking in between the meals can disrupt the normal physiology of digestion. Some nutrients which had been partially absorbed remain undigested in the blood stream because the mid snack restarts the process of digestion creating a pool of AMA or Incomplete byproducts of initial digestion process. This free floating Ama can create toxic environment in the body resulting in autoimmune conditions. Furthermore snacking reduces hunger at meal times or we may skip a meal and lose important nutrients.Snacking increases inflammatory markers and sometimes excessive calories lead to weight gain.So we need not to follow the rat race and can opt for meals according to our body type and metabolism.
